The Cheese Shop's Turkey, Jack & Avocado

I'm sitting at my desk on a Saturday, delighted to be nourishing myself with the fresh flavors of a turkey, jack and avocado sandwich from The Cheese Shop in La Jolla. I swung by the shop on my way back to work during my break at 10:30. Immediately upon my entering the shop, my attention was stolen by the old-time swanker feel from the ageless soda pops decorating the wall, as well as the more futuristic flavors like blueberry fizz. Several smiling faces worked tirelessly behind the counter, and I had the pleasure of being greeted by one. I ordered the beachcomber--ham, turkey and Swiss on a french roll. With hesitation in my stance, I opted for the turkey, jack and avocado for the simple fact that it came on sourdough. Onions? Yes. Mayo? Yes. Mustard? Yes, please! A few moments later, my sandwich was bagged and stuffed into a bag labeled with the shop's signature logo. I drove back to work, resisting my yearning to rip open the bag and trample the sandwich to pieces. I parked, ran up to my office, yanked the over-sized package out. My fingers rustled open the wrapper, revealing two halves of a heaping load of turkey, chopped red onions, cheese, and a slather of white and green from the mayo and smashed avocado, all gathered momentarily between clean white slices of sourdough. The green mess was peeking through the natural holes of the bread. My hands lifted the sandwich to my mouth, and I gave my best effort to include all of the flavors in one bite. The garden of freshness accompanied by the creaminess of the mayo and cheese melted over my tongue. A juicy tomato, hidden below the green smash, added a surprising sweetness to my savory expectations. The mustard and crushed black pepper that was homogeneously spread throughout the sandwich was left standing in my mouth even after the garden of flavors had disappeared. I believe the flavors will linger long into my day.
